What is LEG PRESS?

The leg press is a strength exercise that aims to build leg strength and endurance. It is performed lying on a leg press machine, placing your feet against a platform and pushing with your legs to lift the weight. The load can be adjusted to the desired resistance level and can be increased or decreased in subsequent sets.

Types of Leg Press

There are two types of leg presses that you will commonly find in gyms:

The standard horizontal leg press and the 45 degree leg press which has a seat reclining at an angle while the legs press upward in a diagonal direction.

Both are used to develop the quadriceps and hamstrings, as well as the glutes.

Even though it seems like a simple exercise, it is important to learn how to use the leg press correctly. By paying attention to the form of the exercise you can maximize the benefits of strength development and prevent injuries from improper use.

How best to perform the LEG PRESS?


To perform the leg press, start by sitting on a leg press machine, with your feet placed on the platform slightly wider than your shoulder width.

Position of the feet in the LEG PRESS

The focus on a specific muscle in the press varies based on the position of the feet on the plate. 

We have three different types:

  • If your feet are high on the plate, you’ll hit your glutes more;
  • if they are low on the platform you will hit the quadriceps more;
  • if your feet are wide you will stimulate the muscles of the inner thighs more;
  • if your feet are wide you will also stimulate the quadriceps, glutes and hamstrings more.

Let’s see how to perform a leg press, taking into consideration the second type mentioned above, i.e. with the feet in the center of the platform, with the toes extra-rotated and the legs wide.

First the feet go onto the platform, with the toes extra rotated and the knees perpendicular to the toes. The back must be well supported on the backrest and neutral, avoiding HYPERLORDOSIS, HELPING US WITH THE HANDS, which must be forced on the appropriate handles in order to maintain the correct position of the back and pelvis. Once positioned we must keep in mind that the push must take place with the center of the foot, therefore not on the toes or on the heel. To help stabilize the body we will have to keep the CORE active.

Subsequently we will start with the eccentric, in which we will always have to maintain the correct position of the body, paying particular attention to the knees, which must remain perpendicular to the tips of the feet.

The final phase of the eccentric will end at the point before the retroversion of the pelvis. 

This point is subjective as it depends on the mobility of the ANKLE joint.  

Then we will continue with the concentric in which we will always have to pay attention to our knees and feet. 

In the final phase of the concentric exercise we will have to keep the knees slightly bent without hyper-extending them, so as not to cause problems for the knees.

What are all the benefits of the whole LEG PRESS

The leg press allows you to obtain the same benefits as the classic barbell squat exercise for the development of the quadriceps.

By varying the position of the foot it is possible to emphasize the work and consequently the load on different muscles.   • Sit on the leg press with your back and head resting comfortably on the padded support.
  • Place your feet hip-width apart on the footplate, making sure your heels are flat.
  • Your butt should be flat against the seat rather than raised. Keep your knees bent at a 90-degree angle.
  • If your feet are too high on the plate, you will stress your glutes; if too low you will put unnecessary pressure on your knees.
  • Ensure your feet are in line with your knees, and they should neither bend inward nor outward.
  • As you push, make sure you maintain that alignment.
  • Grab the assist handles to provide support and keep your spine and head in place.
  • Keep your abdominal muscles tense and push off with your heels and forefoot.
  • Your heels should always remain flat on the footplate.
  • The ball of the foot or toes should never be used solely to move the pad forward.

Common mistakes

Having a good form is crucial for maximizing the benefits of your leg press and avoiding injuries. Here are some commom mistakes you need to avoid.

Loads too high

This is not a machine to try for a maximum (1RM), that’s what the squat is for. Many tend to load too much and make reduced ROMs or to help themselves with their hands just to finish the series. Always try to use a load that allows you to do the entire ROM without needing help and above all without using your arms.

Butt that rises

Your buttocks should never lift off the seat . This happens when you try to bring your knees too far towards your chest, almost directly in front of your eyes. It is not necessary to lengthen the movement so much, always stop to ensure maximum tension on the glutes and quadriceps, but without having to raise the buttock and rotate the back.

Reduced ROM

It is not uncommon to see large kgs used in the leg press and reduced ROM. In the squat the “parallel” parameter is used, here it is not possible to use it, but you must definitely keep it as a parameter to try to flex the legs as much as possible without feeling tension in the back or the need to raise the buttocks. The more ROM you can do, the more stimulation you will give your muscles. Doing 10cm of ROM with so many kg is more for the ego than developing your quadriceps.

Go into joint block

Don’t lock your knees in lockout if your knees aren’t 100% . Try to fully contract your quadriceps in the final part of the movement, but you can maintain a slight bend in your knees to avoid straining the joint (especially with heavy weights) and maintain tension on the muscles.


If you have a knee, ankle, or back injury, seek advice from your doctor, a physical therapist, or a coach who specializes in weight training rehabilitation. Many experts advise avoiding the leg press exercise in the case of lumbar hernias.
