Data Management as a Service (DMaaS) is a cloud service that offers companies central storage for different data sources. The term as a service means a pay-per-use business model where customers don’t need to buy or handle data management infrastructure.
With this business model, the customer secures their data with the service provider. This is usually done by installing agents on the data sources to be backed up. In the case of cloud data sources, a simple authentication process is the first step.
DMaaS usually incurs operating costs that depend on the scope of services used by the customer. Technically, it is possible to deploy DMaaS via on-premises infrastructure or a private cloud offered by the DMaaS provider , but the entire infrastructure must be deployed and managed by the DMaaS provider to be reckoned a service. Although it is possible to offer data management as a service in this way, it is not recommended for logistical and financial reasons.
What is data management?
Data management refers to the overall process of storing, organizing, securing, and maintaining all data held by an organization. Data management has several key elements:
Integration: Bringing together disparate data sources into one accessible system
Accuracy: Ensuring all data is accurate at all times
Data governance: Setting policies, procedures, and standards for data management to ensure compliance with both corporate policies and laws.
Storage: Build infrastructure to securely store data on on-premises or cloud-based systems
Security: protect your data from unauthorized access and attacks
Backup and restore: Ensure that data is continuously backed up and can be restored in the event of a major incident
Data analytics: Uncover decision-making insights and information from stored data
If you want to go beyond using spreadsheets for managing data, you have different choices.
Types of data management services
In-house data management:
Some organizations find peace of mind by building an infrastructure to manage the data they have and creating a team to handle all their data needs. This method can require significant investments in hardware, software, storage, personnel, etc. While some companies choose to store all data on in-house physical servers, many choose cloud-based storage or a hybrid of on-premises and cloud.
Data management as a service:
If your company doesn’t have the infrastructure, resources, or expertise to manage and secure the data it holds, data management as a service (DMaas) is an option. DMaaS vendors address all enterprise data challenges, big and small, so businesses can focus their resources on their core business without worrying about the safety of their data. When working with a DMaaS vendor, companies do not need to purchase hardware or hire additional staff, unlike when managing data in-house. The vendor performs all related tasks on behalf of the company as a pay-as-you-go service. Pricing is based on the amount of data stored and additional services required (security, backup and restore, analytics, etc.).
How Data Management as a Service (DMaaS) works
As the name suggests, DMaaS must be delivered as a service. It is not data management as a service if a company needs to purchase, install and maintain significant amounts of infrastructure to manage its data. The term as a service should correspond to the service approach, such as that offered by Salesforce , Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace.
For example, none of these companies require their customers to install or manage any virtual or physical infrastructure to provide or use the Service. Companies using such services simply tell the provider (usually through their interface) their specific requirements, such as how many users to register and how much storage space each user needs. The infrastructure required to provide this service is automatically provisioned and managed by the provider.
Data Management as a Service leverages cloud services to provide scalability , insight, and access to a company’s various data sources. This central data collection is then used to provide data protection and additional services.
Data sources include file servers, application servers and database servers, including virtual machines (VM). Most companies also have data in one or more cloud providers and on many desktops, laptops and mobile devices. A comprehensive data management solution protects and manages data from all sources in a single cloud system. However, a few data management options only protect and manage a subset of these data sources.
The additional services mentioned above include proactive compliance, data analysis, legal hold and centralized search. A centralized view across all data sources provides the best perspective for many of these services. For example, if an e-discovery request requires a company to locate and preserve all instances of a specific employee’s work, the ability to perform a single search across servers, laptops, and cloud instances makes it easier to meet that request.
Three features of DMaaS compared to other data management solutions are:
- A complete DMaaS system can protect all of a company’s data assets while providing additional benefits.
- The central storage of data that DMaaS requires prevents unnecessary costs and makes work easier in different areas of the company.
- Using a data management service (as opposed to purchasing and maintaining the infrastructure to do it yourself) reduces capital expenditures and makes data management costs more predictable.
What are the advantages and drawbacks of data management as a service
Advantages of Data Management as a Service are:
- Providing a fully managed platform from the provider,

The robotic pool cleaner: how to choose the right one?
A robotic pool cleaner is an accessory for cleaning your pool. There are several types of robotic pool cleaners, and they are not all equally efficient. Their objective, however, remains to clean the bottom and walls of the pool to eliminate impurities, and make your swimming pleasant.
What is a robotic pool cleaner?
A robotic pool cleaner is a cleaning accessory for swimming pools. This cleaning device can be automatic or semi-automatic. In all cases, it takes care of cleaning the bottom of the pool and the walls. Some models also allow you to clean stairs and the water line.
There are three types of pool robots : hydraulic pool robots, booster pool robots and automatic pool robots.
Why use a robotic pool cleaner?
Just like a broom, the robotic pool cleaner cleans the bottom of your pool as well as the walls. However, unlike a broom, the robot pool cleaner doesn’t require your assistance and doesn’t ask you to scrub! It takes care of cleaning impurities from your pool all on its own, without any need for your intervention, except for its initial launch and programming.
It turns out to be the ideal cleaning accessory for anyone who doesn’t have the time, or the desire, to clean their pool. It quickly becomes essential to fully enjoy your swimming pool, without worrying about its cleanliness. There are a many types of robotic pool cleaners. You will easily find the pool robot suited to your budget, your needs and your pool.
What are the different types of robotic pool cleaner?
The hydraulic pool robot
This robotic pool cleaner connects to the pool filtration system, via the skimmer or the broom socket. This is the model of pool robot most suitable for small pools or pools with little traffic. In fact, its performance is quite limited and does not allow you to clean large pools, or pools very often used in summer.
Unlike other types of pool robots, the hydraulic pool robot only cleans the bottom of the pool and the walls. It cleans neither the water line nor the stairs of your pool.
The pool robot with booster
The pool robot with booster is connected either to the discharge nozzle of your pool, or to a booster installed outside (generally, in the pool enclosure). In all cases, this pool robot uses water pressure to remove impurities and send them back to the skimmers to filter them. It can also be equipped with its own filter or bag to retain impurities. The pool robot, also called a blower, is more efficient than the hydraulic pool robot, and allows you to clean the bottom, walls and even the stairs of the pool.
Its installation, however, is more complex. It is necessary to call on a professional to install the booster pump in the pool shelter.
The electric or automatic pool robot
This is the most comfortable type of pool robot and completely autonomous. The electric pool robot is connected to an electrical outlet in your house/pool shed. There are also automatic pool robot models which have their own battery or even a solar battery.
Not only are they independent and move autonomously, but electric pool robots are also very efficient. They allow you to clean the bottom, walls, stairs and water line of the pool. Some models of pool robots are also programmable. And they clean your pool according to the dimensions or even the pool model recorded.
Unsurprisingly, being more efficient, automatic pool robots also turn out to be the most expensive robot models.
Robotic pool cleaner performance: what can they do/not do?
Depending on the types of pool robots (hydraulic, automatic and booster), they do not all offer the same performance. Hydraulic pool robots for example, the first models on the market, are simple and accessible but are not very efficient. Unlike other models, they cannot do everything: they cannot clean the stairs or the water line of the pool.
The most efficient, and also the most expensive, pool robot models are electric pool robots. They can clean the bottom of the pool, the walls, the water line and the stairs in the same way.
How to choose the right robotic pool cleaner? What criteria should you take into account?
As we have seen, there are three types of pool robots. And even within these categories, there is a multitude of pool robots. To help you choose a pool robot, at least a model that matches your needs and your pool, you can take several criteria into account (and then make a comparison).
For example, you can choose a pool robot based on
- The type of swimming pool you have, its shape and dimensions. Depending on the size in particular, not all models will be suitable.
- Materials used on the walls, the bottom, the stairs. If it is a shell, a liner or a mosaic, not all robot models are suitable.
- Your use and attendance at the pool . Indeed, if the pool is rarely used, a hydraulic pool robot model is sufficient. However, if the pool welcomes a lot of users in the summer, it is better to opt for a more efficient model such as an automatic pool robot.
- The budget you have, because the price ranges are very wide…
- Time to spend cleaning your pool.
Installation and use of the robotic pool cleaner
For the proper installation of your pool robot in your pool, at least to properly connect the robot to your pool, know that you can call a professional. Moreover, for the installation of a booster pump, the intervention of a professional is more than necessary. If you are a DIYer, you can connect your automatic pool robot or hydraulic pool robot to your pool yourself. Connection is often simple, and well explained in the user manuals.
At what price can you buy a robotic pool cleaner?
The price of a pool robot can vary depending on several factors such as brand, features, pool size and technology level. In general, you can find pool robots at fairly affordable prices, starting from a few hundred euros. These entry-level models offer basic functions such as cleaning the bottom of the pool. For more sophisticated pool robots, with advanced features like intelligent navigation, wall and water line cleaning, the price can increase, ranging from a few hundred to a few thousand euros.
It is essential to consider the size of your pool, your specific cleaning needs, and any warranties and after-sales services offered by the manufacturer when purchasing. It is recommended to compare the different models of pool robots available on the market to find the one that best suits your budget and pool maintenance requirements.
Are robotic pool cleaners worth it?
While robotic pool cleaners rank highest in our evaluations, they also come with a premium price tag. Nevertheless, their effectiveness in handling both large and small debris is unmatched. Additionally, they provide the added benefit of circulating pool water when the filter is inactive and diligently scrubbing tile lines and pool walls.
How does the robot pool cleaner work?
Equipped with integrated touch and distance sensors, it effortlessly navigates around walls and obstacles like curves, stairs, and sharp corners. It efficiently suctions dirt and debris from the pool, storing it in a dedicated filter bag included with the cleaner, and automatically empties the filter bag after each use.
Is it safe to swim with a pool robot?
That being said, robotic pool cleaners are perfectly safe to use while swimming. However, their cleaning performance might not be as optimal when you’re in the pool with them. Technically, you can swim while your robotic pool cleaner is at work, but professionals do not recommend it.
What is the new space field VLEO?
Have you ever heard of VLEO? VLEO is the abbreviation for “Very Low Earth Orbit.” Businesses that take advantage of the benefits of placing artificial satellites into this orbit seem to be gaining momentum. So, what is VLEO, what are its advantages and disadvantages, and what kind of players are entering the market? This time, I would like to delve into this theme.
What is the new space field VLEO?
To be honest, I still can’t find the Japanese translation for VLEO. It is an abbreviation for Very Low Earth Orbit, so it was easily translated as “Very Low Earth Orbit.”
Even if you don’t know about VLEO, many people probably know about LEO: Low Earth Orbit, which refers to altitudes below 2,000km. For example, Earth observation satellites, reconnaissance satellites, and the International Space Station ISS are placed in orbit in this area. This is a very popular trajectory.
VLEO is defined as an altitude of 500 km or less. However, I get the impression that many companies are aiming for an altitude of approximately 200 km within this VLEO range.
The most famous pioneer of VLEO is JAXA’s Very Low Altitude Satellite Technology Test Vehicle “Tsubame” (SLATS). The satellite was in operation from December 2017 to October 2019. At that time, it was called Super Low Altitude instead of VLEO. Its main mission is to monitor atomic oxygen, such as measuring atomic oxygen and monitoring material deterioration, and to provide a compact high-resolution optical sensor.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of sending satellites to VLEO?
First, let’s talk about the disadvantages. VLEO has the disadvantage that, for example, at altitudes of 200 to 300 km, the density of atomic oxygen, which degrades atmospheric resistance and satellite materials, is about 1,000 times higher than the altitudes at which regular Earth observation satellites fly. Therefore, in this VLEO region, atmospheric resistance makes it difficult to precisely control the satellite’s attitude and orbit, and the satellite is easily damaged by heat caused by atomic oxygen and atmospheric friction, making it more likely to fail. This was considered unsuitable. Therefore, VLEO satellites have a short lifespan.
However, the lower the altitude, the more it contributes to lower costs. For example, according to Thales Alenia Space, a leading European space company, when the satellite altitude drops from 650km to 160km, to achieve the same performance, the radar transmission power must be 64 times, the communications transmission power 16 times, and the optical aperture diameter is said to be reduced by four times. This means that costs can be reduced from the design stage.
Additionally, because VLEO is close to the Earth, it has the advantage of being able to capture images with a high resolution of less than 1 meter using optical satellites, such as earth observation satellites. In other words, the lower the altitude, the higher resolution images can be obtained. By the way, SLATS is able to maintain orbit for 7 days at an altitude of 167.4 km, which is also recognized in the Guinness Book of Records.
What is VLEO’s business?
So, what kind of players are trying to enter VLEO? Many companies seem to be primarily planning earth observation satellites and communication satellites.
First, there is Aerospace Corp. in the United States. They are planning to launch a disk-shaped satellite to VLEO, as you can guess from the name Disksat. The altitude is 1m in diameter, 2.5cm thick, weighs 2.5kg, and can generate 200W of power. One of the advantages is that there is no expansion structure.
Can you see in the image below that the solar cells are attached to the disk? Let’s call this the surface. Can you see that there is a small square box-shaped thing attached to the edge of the surface? This is an electric propulsion thruster. Although it is not visible in the image, a phased array antenna is attached to the back, which will function as a communication satellite or radar satellite. By the way, this Disksat flies like a Frisbee. They are not susceptible to atmospheric resistance, have a simple structure, can be loaded in large quantities onto transport vehicles such as rockets, and can be assembled into constellations relatively easily.
Skeyeon’s Near Earth Orbiter: Cost-effective and Efficient
A company called Skeyeon has developed a satellite called Skeyeon Near Earth Orbiter. It has a pointed shape. This satellite has a resolution of 1m, and the volume of the optical system was reduced to 1/25th, and the cost was reduced to 1/10 to 1/50th. The Skeyeon Near Earth Orbiter can also be equipped with a phased array antenna, allowing it to operate as a communication satellite or radar satellite. Skeyeon also has the advantage of developing and patenting a self-healing material that is resistant to atomic oxygen.
There is also a satellite called SkimSat. It was announced by companies Thales Alenia and SEA, but details are unknown at this time. The satellite has a pointed shape, is 1m long, and weighs 40kg. The structure is covered with solar panels and is also equipped with star sensors and electric propulsion thrusters, allowing for highly precise attitude control. By introducing SkimSat into VLEO, the plan is to achieve 1m resolution on SAR and IR (infrared observation) satellites.
Albedo has not yet announced the satellite it will deploy to VLEO, but it has already announced that it will develop and launch its own optical satellite for VLEO to achieve a resolution as high as 10cm.In addition, Earth Observant was commissioned by the U.S. Air Force in 2020 to develop an Earth observation satellite that can be deployed in VLEO. It is said to have the ability to capture images with a resolution of 25 cm and transmit that data directly to fighter jets flying in space around Earth in just a few minutes.
