What is the new space field VLEO?




Have you ever heard of VLEO? The most famous pioneer of VLEO is JAXA’s Very Low Altitude Satellite Technology Test Vehicle “Tsubame” (SLATS). The satellite was in operation from December 2017 to October 2019. At that time, it was called Super Low Altitude instead of VLEO. Its main mission is to monitor atomic oxygen, such as measuring atomic oxygen and monitoring material deterioration, and to provide a compact high-resolution optical sensor.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of sending satellites to VLEO?

First, let’s talk about the disadvantages. VLEO has the disadvantage that, for example, at altitudes of 200 to 300 km, the density of atomic oxygen, which degrades atmospheric resistance and satellite materials, is about 1,000 times higher than the altitudes at which regular Earth observation satellites fly. For example, according to Thales Alenia Space, a leading European space company, when the satellite altitude drops from 650km to 160km, to achieve the same performance, the radar transmission power must be 64 times, the communications transmission power 16 times, and the optical aperture diameter is said to be reduced by four times. This means that costs can be reduced from the design stage.

Additionally, because VLEO is close to the Earth, it has the advantage of being able to capture images with a high resolution of less than 1 meter using optical satellites, such as earth observation satellites. In other words, the lower the altitude, the higher resolution images can be obtained. By the way, SLATS is able to maintain orbit for 7 days at an altitude of 167.4 km, which is also recognized in the Guinness Book of Records.

What is VLEO’s business?

So, what kind of players are trying to enter VLEO? Many companies seem to be primarily planning earth observation satellites and communication satellites.

First, there is Aerospace Corp. in the United States. They are planning to launch a disk-shaped satellite to VLEO, as you can guess from the name Disksat. The altitude is 1m in diameter, 2.5cm thick, weighs 2.5kg, and can generate 200W of power. One of the advantages is that there is no expansion structure.

Can you see in the image below that the solar cells are attached to the disk? Let’s call this the surface. Can you see that there is a small square box-shaped thing attached to the edge of the surface? This is an electric propulsion thruster. Albedo has not yet announced the satellite it will deploy to VLEO, but it has already announced that it will develop and launch its own optical satellite for VLEO to achieve a resolution as high as 10cm.In addition, Earth Observant was commissioned by the U.S. Air Force in 2020 to develop an Earth observation satellite that can be deployed in VLEO.
